Rafting on the Colorado River is a popular activity of visitors to the Grand Canyon. Many rafting trips begin at Lees Ferry close to Page Arizona. There are different types of rafting trips available in the Grand Canyon. For example there are full canyon trips that off both motorized and oar powered rafting trips. These trips can last up to 14 days if you are using oars or up to 8 days if you are using motorized boats.
As you might imagine half canyon rafting trips are typically shorter than full canyon trips. The half canyon rafting trips can still last from 4 to 9 days depending on where you start your trip. One day rafting trips are also available from the Hualapai Reservation and give you a view of the Grand Canyon West. Half day rafting trips are also available leaving from the Glen Canyon Dam in Page Arizona.
Commercial Rafting Trips
There are currently three types of commercial rafting trips that are available through the Grad Canyon National Park.
One Day Commercial Rafting Trips
The half day and full day rafting trips offer whitewater and smooth water trips down the Colorado River. Some of these trips take off in the northeastern portion of the Grand Canyon between the Glen Canyon Dam and Lees Ferry. Other half day and full day rafting trips take off from the western end of the Grand Canyon from Quartermaster of Diamond Creek.
Non-Commercial Rafting Trips from Two to Five Days
Longer rafting trips are available on noncommercial trips that begin at Diamond Creek and takeout at Lake Meade. These white water trips can last anywhere from two to five days in length and covers 52 miles of white and smooth water. This rafting trip requires permits that can be distributed up to 1 year in advance. The permits are distributed on a first come, first serve basis. The Grand Canyon National Park offers up to two non-commercial river trips per day and the groups are limited to 16 people each. There is no fee however rafters will be charged by the Hualapai Tribe for crossing their land.
Lees Ferry to Diamond Creek Rafting Trips
Whitewater rafting trips from Lees Ferry can be taken in a motorized or non-motorized raft. The trips vary in length with seven days as a minimum in a motorized raft. Half trip options are available for rafters who want to hike out at Phantom Ranch; both commercial and noncommercial trips are available.
